Dozens Unaccounted For Following Craft Holding Two Hundred Asylum Seekers Capsizes in waters off Gambia.
No fewer than seven individuals have perished and a significant number remain unaccounted for following a vessel transporting approximately 200 migrants attempting to reach the European continent overturned off the coast of the Gambian coast, officials state.
The boat overturned in the early hours of Thursday in the vicinity of Jinack village in the northern bank region and it was afterwards located "beached on a shoal", the country's defence ministry announced officially.
Nearly one hundred people have been saved to date and a rescue operation continues for the remaining passengers who were traveling on the shipwrecked vessel that was heading towards the Spanish Canary Islands.
The perilous journey over the Atlantic Ocean has become an increasingly common route for migrants from Africa trying to reach European nations.
Nearly 47,000 individuals arrived at the Canary Islands in 2024 and data indicates in excess of nine thousand individuals have died in the attempt.
Rescue Operation
In the aftermath of the disaster, the navy initiated a search operation, using several naval vessels and a commercial fishing craft that offered help, the defense officials reported.
Reports indicate several of the victims are not Gambian nationals and that their identities are still being verified.
The remains of the seven victims who perished at sea have been recovered, and ten of the survivors are said to be in serious condition and getting immediate medical attention.
A Common Migration Route
The Gambia is a frequent corridor used by migrants attempting to enter European countries, often on dangerous journeys across ocean and terrain.
Over the past few years, the European bloc has established pacts with a number of North African nations designed to curtailing undocumented migration.
