India's capital Awakens to Dangerous Pollution After Festival of Lights
Tuesday brought residents of the world's most polluted city found themselves breathing dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" range.
Record-Breaking Air Quality Readings
Several parts of the city showed an AQI exceeding 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the recommended level recommended by the global health authority.
Particular areas, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of eighteen hundred, equating to 15-20x above acceptable levels.
Firecracker Ban and Recent Changes
For the past four years, authorities had implemented a total prohibition on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the hazardous pollution that engulfs the capital as winter sets in.
Yet earlier this year, the recently formed city government petitioned the judicial authority to request a relaxation of the prohibition.
Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically doubted by environmentalists as being only about 30% less polluting – as a middle ground between "tradition and environment".
Judicial Verdict and Implementation
To the disappointment of environmental and health advocates, the court complied with the request, stipulating that green firecrackers could be set off during designated periods throughout the festival.
On Monday night, there was extensive disregard of the designated hours across the metropolis, with little monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly type.
Numerous recording stations throughout the capital recorded contamination peaking around midnight to the most severe levels seen during the festival in at least the past three years.
Cross-Border Effects
The proliferation of firecrackers during the festival also triggered a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province partially attributing declining atmospheric conditions in Lahore on hazardous particles traveling from neighboring India following the events.
Persistent Environmental Problem
The dangerously high readings of atmospheric toxins in the city have persisted as a major challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the problem showing no improvement.
During the festival period, the concentration of dangerous particles in the air has been found to shoot up to seventy percent above the worst levels ever documented in the Chinese city, which was formerly regarded as the planet's dirtiest city.
Diverse Contamination Contributors
The situation in the city is attributed to a combination of multiple factors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, construction activities, waste incineration and pollutants from agricultural fires in neighbouring regions of Punjab and Haryana.
Within these states, agricultural workers illegally set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, creating toxic haze that becomes contained over the capital as colder air arrives.
Health and Economic Impact
Both financial and medical consequences on the nearly 33 million residents living in the capital region is substantial, according to various research.
This pollution causes increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing conditions, and can even lead to oncological diseases.
The pollution is calculated to be causing ten thousand untimely mortalities annually in the city.
